International trade and Ukraine's pursuit of <scp>self‐determination</scp>

Abstract In this research, we assess the international trade implications of Ukraine's pursuit self‐determination through lens EU–Ukraine Association Agreement and contemporaneous war with Russia in years preceding 2022 Russian Invasion. To do so, construct a dataset annual, bilateral export import flows for Ukraine set comparator countries at 6‐digit level Harmonised Tariff Schedule (HS) 2000–2019. Using data, nest difference‐in‐difference design within series econometric gravity models to estimate effects on sectoral geographic composition Ukrainian trade. Our results indicate major re‐direction exports towards EU away from Russia. Trade outcomes are one many considerations that led integration.
